# Draw a field

Draw and edit an array boundary, then choose its surface and racking.

A field defines an area for modules. Its type, equipment, setbacks, and racking determine the layout.

## Draw

1. Select the field drawing tool in the top toolbar.
2. Click each corner of the boundary.
3. Finish the shape by clicking its closing point or pressing `Enter`.
4. Return to **Cursor** and select the field to configure it.

Hold `Shift` while drawing to use the available angle constraints. Undo removes the last change.

## Select and edit

Select a field on the map or in the [Layers panel](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/layers/). Drag its boundary points to reshape it. Use the selected field's move controls to reposition it, and inspect its location in both plan and 3D views.

Rename it in the inspector or Layers panel. Use the field menu for duplicate, locate, hide, lock, or delete. A locked layer must be made editable before its geometry or settings can change.

## Type

The **Type** picker combines the mounting surface and racking.

| Surface | Racking choices |
| --- | --- |
| **Ground** | Fixed-tilt, Single-axis tracker, East-West |
| **Flat roof** | Fixed-tilt, East-West, Flush-mount |
| **Pitched roof** | Flush-mount, Fixed-tilt, East-West |
| **Canopy** | Canopy |
| **Floating** | Fixed-tilt, East-West |

Choose the surface, then the appropriate racking option. Check the resulting layout and inspector settings after a change.

## Setback and height

**Setback** keeps modules inside the field boundary. Roofs and canopies also have a height setting. Inspect edge setbacks when the field has different values on different sides.

For buildings, **Ground elevation** is the ground reference used for height. Check it against the site. [3D measurements](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/3d-measurements/) can help estimate roof heights and slopes.

## Azimuth and tilt

On a pitched roof, the field's **Azimuth · Tilt** describes the roof. Module angles are set in **Racking** when the selected mounting arrangement allows them.

Azimuth is measured clockwise from north: 0° is north and 180° is south. Tracker rotation and fixed-racking tilt have different controls; use the preview for the selected type.

## Weather

Choose the design's weather source in **Weather**. Provider availability depends on your organization's [integrations](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/system/integrations/). Uploaded files are managed in [Weatherfiles](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/system/weatherfiles/).

Changing the weather source affects the design's modeling, so review it before comparing results.

## Finish the layout

Choose the [equipment and racking](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/inspector/), add [obstructions](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/obstructions/), and review [refinement](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/refinement/) settings. On a sloped ground-mount site, use [terrain tracking](https://docs.staging.solesca.com/editor/terrain/) when licensed.
